Mónica Sarmiento Castillo - "Naturaleza"

Biography:
(English)
She was born in Loja, Ecuador in 1967. In 1987 she earned the Bachelor with Honors degree in Art and Design by the Escuela de Bellas Artes de la Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja.

Since 2001 she has been working with CB&a Consultores-Auditores, S.L in Alicante as the project coordinator for the Museo del Vidrio de la Comunidad Valenciana.

In 2003 she began to develop her doctorate project by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

As well as Joaquin Torres-Garcia, the Universal Constructivist pioneer, Monica Sarmiento also uses ancient geometrical forms with pre-Columbian themes within her work. Utilizing natural materials she makes symbols and designs that are characterized by their primitive appearance.

While Torres-Garcia pretends to show the primitive aspects by integrating ancient pre-Columbian symbols in his work; the Monica Sarmiento methods reflects another purpose: her art is a vibrant colored gamma and illustrates a uniqueness sensation, especially by detailing nature’s colours.

Artes Figueiredo Group

By the end of June, a four members selection of Artes Figueiredo Group has been exhibiting in our gallery. Here it is a brief description of them all:

Israel Macedo is a young Brazilian artist who has in recent years begun to surprise collectors and art critics alike. Starting very young with painting and drawing, it was just a few years ago that he decided to use clay for modeling and begun to create sculpture. With his professional use of bronze and metal castings, all his many talents started to bloom at once. His work impresses for the surreal and good humor found in his suprising creations. Full of details, his work shows both a friendliness and a subtle sense of comedy. His series of Apples with or without an Ant Friend have been very successful in Brazil. His surname "Macedo" in Portuguese means the place where apple trees grow, another funny sign coming from Israel Macedo.

Odete M. Figueiredo was born in Portugal, and lives in Brazil where she paints and models clay hearing the waves of the Atlantic ocean. Her atelier actually has a nice view of the ocean and is part of the inspiration for the so called organic art. She creates pieces of art that have been exhibited in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and other cities in Brazil, where has earned many golden and silver medals. Her natural curiosity makes her to try different materials and finishings for her bronze and resin works. She always looks for new textures and colors.

Dominique LeComte was born in France in 1949, and has lived in Brazil since 1973. He has a surrealistic style, and has used different media in the last 40 years to express his art. Painting is his passion. His art works usually involve sexy women and lots of color, always reflecting his actual mood: brighter is the canvas and sexier is the women, happier is he when painted that. That he could never change it has always given a picture of his mood. The artist has won gold medals from many international art exhibitions, including painting and sculpture. He has also published a book of drawings and has worked as a jewelry designer.

Mauro Soares is a Brazilian artist born in 1955. His work is a modern and unique search for the same bright and colors of a photography but using an odd way: His paintings are done with about 20 layers of acrylic ink, each layer painted only with small 2 inches strips of the same color. When the canvas is finished, and you look from a fair distance it does look like a photo, from near a lot of small strips overlaid. His work can be found in important private contemporary art collections and 2 of his paintings have been published in the Brazilian Playboy magazine.

Latest Exhibitions - Summer Solstice 09'

Solstice:
n.
1. Either of two times of the year when the sun is at its greatest distance from the celestial equator. The summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere occurs about June 21, when the sun is in the zenith at the tropic of Cancer; the winter solstice occurs about December 21, when the sun is over the tropic of Capricorn. The summer solstice is the longest day of the year and the winter solstice is the shortest.

Inspired by it Ward-Nasse Gallery brought an amazing exhibit by the entire month of June featuring the following artists: Cristina Matarasso, Milton Mota, Ricardo P. Pinto, Tais Melillo, Leda Maria (as curator too) and another 6 members of the Sciacco Group.
